Rooted in Conservation
For over ten years, the Timbavati Foundation has invested in connecting our communities to conservation and fostering a love for their environment to preserve our planet and those who depend on it. Various sustainability programmes, outreach and educational initiatives in secondary and primary schools operate with a core focus on teaching best environmental practices and inspiring awe for their natural surroundings.
Environmental education
Since 2010, the Timbavati Foundation has been actively supporting neighboring communities, focusing on areas of greatest need. Our projects impact local communities, schools, and vulnerable families, striving to uplift and empower.
Deep within community lands, the Foundation is dedicated to enhancing environmental education in rural schools. Despite challenges like limited resources and outdated infrastructure, these schools receive vital support. With a hands-on, engaging approach, we not only raise environmental awareness but also equip the younger generation with essential knowledge and skills.
For years, our operations were based at a stunning environmental school, now transformed into a world-class tertiary training facility. This facility, managed by the MORE Field Guiding College, annually offers bursaries to support youth development.
Building relationships with over 64 local schools, we actively engage with eight focus schools, providing weekly environmental education sessions. These sessions not only complement the CAPS Natural Science Curriculum but also offer a broader, worldly perspective on environmental learning.
Connected Conservation Cycle:
The Timbavati Foundation’s connected conservation cycle emphasizes the importance of starting the journey of conservation and environmental awareness at the early stages of childhood development.
By introducing conservation principles to young children, we lay the groundwork for a lifelong commitment to protecting our natural heritage. This early education fosters a deep appreciation and passion for wildlife and their environment, which is nurtured and expanded at each subsequent level of developmental growth. The cycle culminates in integrating economic value and inclusion from the wildlife economy, ensuring that conservation efforts are sustainable and beneficial to local communities.
Allowing for expansion into the working world as well as entrepreneurial opportunities. This holistic approach not only safeguards biodiversity but also empowers individuals with the knowledge and economic opportunities needed to support conservation initiatives throughout their own lives.
Timbavati Foundation EcoPod Centre
Excitingly, we now operate from the Timbavati EcoPod Centre, a community-based environmental hub. Here, learners and partners delve into the marvels of nature through engaging activities and a meticulously crafted EE curriculum.
The Timbavati EcoPod Centre offers an immersive experience across three unique ecosystems—savannah, freshwater, and marine. With innovative design and spacious classrooms, visitors are transported to these worlds.
The Savannah Pod boasts expansive dimensions and open-air features, while the upcoming underwater Pod promises a captivating adventure with multi-level spaces and cutting-edge technology. Through this initiative, we aim to inspire learners and community members to embrace holistic learning beyond their everyday surroundings.
Our EE sessions incentivize learning with a performance-based reward system. Top EcoChamp learners enjoy holiday program excursions, including visits to Koru Camp, the Hoedspruit Reptile Centre, and game drives in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve. At the core of our approach is a commitment to practical and tangible environmental learning, fostering a profound connection to nature among learners.
